Chair Restoration
One of the more impressive and sought after services at our Business Service Center in Opal, Fauquier County, VA is the restoration of chairs. Using cane, splint oak, and rush rope, Didlake employees are able to restore chairs to their past luster and glory. Our cane methods include:
- Woven Cane—If your chair has a series of holes drilled around the rim of its seat or back, this chair can be restored using the woven cane method. The cane is first wet to increase its flexibility and then woven in a unique pattern throughout the various holes. Using a series of detailed steps, the cane is woven into an attractive pattern.
- Pressed Cane—Chairs with a narrow groove around the frame of the seat or back can also be restored. A slightly different type of cane material is utilized. This process employs the tacking of a sheet of pre-woven cane into place around the frame of the chair seat or chair back.
- Splint Oak Method—The material used in this technique is an inch wide strip of oak wood. These thin strips of oak are woven around and through the chair seat and/or chair back creating an eye-catching checkered pattern.
- Rush Rope Method—Rush is a durable natural material wound in rope-like fashion. The rush rope is weaved around the chair seat or chair back, creating an extraordinary design.
Once the weave is complete, the cane, splint oak, and rush rope can be stained and/or shellacked to increase its shine and durability and to match or contrast the color of the chair to your preference. Each cane technique is distinctive and beautiful in its own way. We recommend that you give those antique furnishings in your attic, basement, or garage a second chance at greatness.
