Supporting Didlake

Since our founding in 1965, Didlake has had one mission:  create opportunities that enrich the lives of people with disabilities. Today our programs for Supported Employment, Community Inclusion and our newest effort – the Personal Support Network for long term care – help more than 1,400 people each year. We are Virginia’s leading employer of people with disabilities.

Many of the people we help get assistance from government programs that help to pay for the training and rehabilitative services we provide.  But an increasing number do not.  The people we employ directly in our Business Service Centers and on government and commercial contracts generate income that pays their salaries and many other expenses. We practice the highest standards of fiscal responsibility – but not every venture pays for itself.

Most importantly, the people we’re helping today face a very uncertain tomorrow. Most will need some kind of assistance to care for themselves throughout their lives. Their families worry, not just about how to provide for them financially, but who will be there to make sure that the things that make their loved ones’ lives special are not forgotten.

The programs and services Didlake provides are proven successes. We’ve helped thousands of people with developmental disabilities to “dream big”. Daily, we witness their courage and determination as they work to make their dreams come true.

Government programs are not enough. We need to find more job opportunities for people with disabilities. We need to provide the network of supports – training, advocacy, rehabilitative therapy – that help people develop the skills they need to get, and keep, a job. We need, most urgently, to develop a means to assist families who face certain disaster knowing that their disabled child is likely to outlive their ability to care for them.

The people we help are your neighbors, your friends, your family members. They need you.  So do we. Your financial support can help bring dignity and purpose to the lives of some of our community's most underserved citizens.
