Mary
Mary, a young woman with severe mental retardation, was repeatedly asked to leave the various programs she was placed in, because she was considered a “behavior problem.” Her mother found it difficult to keep a job as she was constantly required to take time off to care for Mary—both women relied on public assistance to survive. Then Mary came to Didlake where she was able to work one-on-one with a rehabilitation specialist. Today, Mary is one of the most productive workers at Didlake’s bulk mailing operation. Her mother was able to complete her nursing degree and find full-time employment. Both Mary and her mother are now working taxpayers who live independently. Last year, Mary’s mom took her first vacation in twenty-six years.
